Project description from design firms Combo Home:
The 1.5-storey Vietnamese house inspired by Japanese architecture that lies peacefully in the suburbs
Mikan Village is a duplex holiday house inspired by traditional Japanese architecture mixed with modern and pillared house style. As “Mikan” means “tangerine” in Japanese, the house is beautifully located on a high hill in the Quyt (tangerine) neighborhood in Yen Bai with a view of Ba Vi mountain.
Mikan Village not only lies in harmony with the gentle terrain of the land, but also possesses many advantages suitable for Vietnam’s climate. In terms of structure, the 1.5-storey house has a floor that hides technical equipment, electrical wires, water and air conditioning units to help it maintain a beautiful appearance. The first floor is a common space including a living room, kitchen and swimming pool. The 2nd floor is the resting area with tranquil private bedrooms.
The construction material used for Mikan Village is autoclaved aerated concrete, which is new in the Vietnam market. According to the architects, this material helps keep the house cool in summer and warm in winter, stabilizing the temperature inside and outside the house more effectively than normal red brick and saving energy to significantly reduce the cost of electricity. Besides, the lightweight brick structure also makes the transportation process to mountainous terrain easier and more convenient.
The interior system of the house is made from imported Buna wood combined with high-quality heat-resistant glass to reduce heat and limit noise. A sliding door system is also used to create maximum open space to bring nature into the house. The architects installed thick mica and traditional Japanese shoji paper between the sliding doors to help the house stay beautiful over time while minimizing the appearance of industrial materials.
The main space in the house is the living room and the kitchen. This is a cozy common area where family members gather to drink tea, eat cakes, and share stories of daily life.

The second floor has one bedroom and a private bathroom. The highlight in the bedroom is the round glass door overlooking the beautiful Ba Vi hills. The headboard wall is made of industrial wood with fabric grain and CNC carved bamboo leaves, delicately hand-painted to show the homeowner’s aesthetic. The image of bamboo appearing in both the outside and inside spaces of the house is a meaningful image in the design. “Bamboo” in Vietnamese is pronounced close to the Vietnamese rendition of “wish”, which means good luck and blessings to the whole family. The slender, elegant bamboo silhouette also adds sophistication to the design and leaves a highlight feature in the space.

With a sophisticated layout, the architects have given the family a cozy and fully equipped living space, ensuring the need for rest and relaxation of family members. There is nothing better than waking up in a such peaceful place, watching the vast sky and earth, hearing the birds singing, gathering together with family meals, enjoying all these beautiful moments in a cozy nest called “Mikan Village”.
