Project description from design firms
The Ajman Park Bakery by UMKY design studio is a compelling example of how commercial architecture can function as a seamless extension of urban public space, balancing harsh climatic demands with a philosophy of transparency and “domestic” hospitality.
Inspired by the Gemini constellation – a symbol of movement, lightness, and discovery – the project revolves around the idea of a “breathing” space. Instead of creating a closed envelope, the studio utilized large-scale sliding mechanisms that dissolve the boundaries between the interior and the surrounding park.
To address the extreme heat of the region, the building features deep pergola canopies on three sides. These structures provide essential shading for the terraces and prevent direct solar gain, ensuring a comfortable indoor climate throughout the day.
The 305 sqm layout was informed by a detailed analysis of pedestrian flows within the park. The main entrance is aligned with the park’s central axis, while back-of-house operations and staff logistics are discreetly tucked away to maintain an uninterrupted public experience.

The interior’s visual anchor is a central bar constructed from custom-cast concrete bricks. A specific mint-green pigment was added during the casting process to create a tactile connection between the masonry and the park’s lush greenery.
To evoke a sense of warmth and security, the ceiling mimics the silhouette of a pitched roof. This architectural gesture scales the tall space down to a domestic level while cleverly concealing the robust HVAC systems required for the bakery’s operations.
At the core of the project is a glass-enclosed production zone. Integrating a semi-open kitchen into a high-traffic guest area required precise engineering of the ventilation systems, allowing visitors to witness the artisanal process while maintaining impeccable air quality in the seating area.
As a permanent structure in a sensitive recreational zone, the project navigated complex urban approvals to become a long-term architectural landmark. It stands as a vibrant hub that reflects the owner’s passion for hedonism, hospitality, and the daily magic of fresh baking.
