Project description from design firms Luke Nguyen Lab
The apartment was handed over to the owner in a ‘bare shell’ condition, giving the owner and design team a complete freedom to renovate and configurate layout. The owner preferes a minimal space with the use of natural materials such as wood and stone, similar to his Singapore residence. Bringing natural light deep into the apartment is a challenge, as the open living area is quite long and narrow.
Once entering the apartment, one encounters an intimate entrance with low ceiling of 2.5m where shoe cabinets and door to main bathroom are located. The space opens up in the main living dining and kitchen area with ceiling being raised to 3m. We aim to keep the common living space open, without fixed partitions between the living room, kitchen, and dining area to allow for a free flow of space and enhance family connectivity. From this open space, hidden doors leading to other 3 bedrooms.
A simple and neutral material palette was used inluding wood, stone and concrete while the design is gemetric and unadorned, featuring clean and neat surfaces. The white wall and glossy polished concrete floor help reflect and diffuse natural light throughout the apartment, including into deeper corners. A real piece of stone is used for the TV cabinet to create a subtle contrast of roughness with the smoothness of the space. Wood paneling along the side wall creates a visual effect and frames the kitchen. Indoor plants also help soften the space and create a pleasant atmosphere for the space. Overall the design has achieved the aesthetics envisioned by both us and the homeowner from the beginning.
