A Black Wooden Retreat on the Edge of a Nature Reserve
This deeply personal project by designer Julia Kamanina was crafted for a family with children and dogs, situated right on the border of a protected nature reserve.
Here, the interior embraces the beauty of imperfection. Natural materials—such as wood and patinated porcelain stoneware—are chosen to age gracefully, while floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows seamlessly blur the boundaries between indoors and the surrounding nature. The dramatic black walls serve as a striking canvas for the interplay of light and shadow, complemented by a deep plum-colored staircase and subtle, nature-inspired accents.
The furnishings were thoughtfully and unhurriedly curated. The space features a 19th-century vintage sideboard, vintage brass Florian Schulz lighting, custom chandeliers by Annalampdesign, and a painting titled “Asters” by the artist Tasha—a piece that patiently waited nearly a year to find its perfect spot.
The core philosophy of the project lies in the beauty of simplicity, rich textures, and the right to be imperfect. It is an interior designed for real, everyday living, rather than just for display.
