Located in a pre-war building in an area of Riga known for its immaculate Art Nouveau facades, the Gentlemen’s Apartment spans across its top two floors. The second floor is actually an adapted attic. Open AD took on a complete transformation of the apartment from floor plan to furniture and fixtures. Inspired by the location, history of the building and the client’s lifestyle, the Open AD team created an apartment, which combines the old and new. Historically, the front-facing interiors would have been more lavish. They would have been the owners’ quarters where they also entertained guests. It was once the custom to have live-in housekeeping staff, so the rooms in the back of the building were reserved for understated staff quarters. This is a contrast we chose to preserve with shared living quarters on the street side and bedrooms facing the back. We also ensured a change in atmosphere and aesthetics between both floors. A dramatic, dark but lit statement staircase creates the impression of levitating. The stairs guide residents between the two floors both physically and mentally. Any new volumes such as the silver bathroom unit are designed to stand out against the modern classic scenery. The newcomers are inspired by the idea of a spaceship and fresh landings in historical locations.

The apartment is home to two adult gentlemen – a father and son. The palette of robust natural materials and our choice of colours are an interpretation of masculinity. A backdrop with features such as bespoke wood panelling, red and green marble surfaces creates an evocative setting for the handpicked designer furniture from brands such as B&B Italia, Minotti and Maxalto. Family heirlooms add a touch of personalisation.

Open AD did not forget about fun, and clever features to help separate work and play. Lighting helps conjure different moods and sensations. The sauna area is a space to relax and let loose in the comfort of one’s own home. And the quirky tower becomes a grown-up treehouse or man cave. The space is boldly furnished in reds and features rich materials like velvet and marble. Wonderful for entertaining. Not to mention the spacious roof terrace of 86 m2, which affords the residents their very own outdoor haven in the heart of the city.

Open AD worked with renowned local suppliers and masters of their craft to create an apartment, which celebrates historical grandeur, timeless quality and craftsmanship.
