Project description from design firms DA Bureau

The new DEPARTMENT 57 club space is located in a unique historical building and combines club and bar areas that function both unitedly as well as separately.
We developed distinctive, colourful, and unique visual styles for each space, using light and media art as our main tools.

Our main goal was to reimagine the club environment and bring it to the forefront of design, light, and media art. In order to achieve this goal, we eliminated all redundancies in the project to encourage guests to not only hear but also feel the music, to fully immerse themselves in a unique audiovisual atmosphere.

We were inspired by various natural phenomena that create complex lighting effects and sought to reproduce them in a minimalistic and modern way in the interior.

The space was formed from an existing room with historic vaults. We sought to emphasise its concision and completeness, creating a single mono-material space that provides a backdrop for the media art. Each zone houses specially designed media installations, each reproducing one of the selected natural phenomena.

The main dance space is illuminated as well as bright and vibrant. At its centre there is a large glowing sphere located next to the DJ desk. It is surrounded by ‘lightning bolts’ that pierce the room, creating pulsating flashes of light synchronised with the music.

In contrast to the club, the bar space has a calm and relaxed atmosphere and can be associated with the Northern Lights effect: a chamber space with sparkling light. There is also a secret area of the bar, aka ‘gin’, which is a kind of ‘ice cave’ – a laboratory with unique cocktails. All these ideas inspired by nature were developed and realised together with YARKO Lighting Design Studio.

We believe that this concept will bring a completely new club experience, embarking each guest on a unique journey with every visit.
